(Crisp) Review: NIGHT OF LOVE by FENIL SETA

Night Of Love is an extremely creative and surreal play that attempts to try something very radical. It’s my most novel theatre experience and although it takes time to get used to it, it makes for a great watch. Also, I saw the play at Yiamas – The Experimental Space which was a very unconventional space for a play and it added to the impact. It was so cool to see actors performing few feet away from you. The writing is very strong and good to see the writer-director Omkar Bhatkar has gone all out and come up with something that he genuinely wanted to make. And it was a surprise to see that he also features in the play as an actor – and he’s bloody good. In fact, all actors have done a brilliant job – Manav Arora (superb dialogue delivery), Bageshri Joshirao (excellent), Nishitha Juneja (very expressive), Brandon Ferriera (amazing stage presence), Pravin Gangwani (subtle but leaves a mark). Special mention should also go to Juilee Manjrekar, Teena Ghamrey, Gwyneth Samson and Zainab Changi – their presence adds a lot of intrigue to the play. Great sets and costumes (Mimiksha Roy and Omkar Bhatkar) and the soothing music (Derek and Brandon Fietcher) is like an icing on the cake. Usually, there’s a Q & A session since it’s a highly interpretative play and the narrative evokes lots of doubts and questions among the viewers. Sadly, such a session couldn’t happen after the show that I attended. The play is not everyone’s cup of tea but those craving for a hatke theatre experience should definitely give Night Of Love a try!

My rating – *** out of 5!
