(Crisp) Review: AMMI AKHTARI by FENIL SETA

Ammi Akhtari is about the life and times of Begum Akhtar. It gives a one-of-its-kind experience as it merges drama with a ghazal concert, all in one. Since the experience is new, it takes around 20 minutes to get a hang of it as we are not used to seeing actors suddenly pausing while the ghazal singer (Talat Aziz) takes centre stage. Once you get used to it, then it’s quite interesting. Saif Hyder Hasan‘s direction is top-notch and the writing by Dr M Sayeed Alam is also exemplary. Padmini Kolhapure is superb as always while Tejaswini Kolhapure is electrifying. Talat Aziz nicely adds a musical touch. All in all, Ammi Akhtari is worth watching for its novel idea.
