Sector 36, which has released today on Netflix, is the story of a serial killer and a cop. It is inspired by real events and is quite a disturbing film. It is definitely not for the faint-hearted, even though the makers imply instead of visually depicting the violence. Director Aditya Nimbalkar also scores in the dramatic scenes. A 17-minute long scene at a crucial juncture will leave viewers speechless and it is amazing that a first-timer was able to crack it so well. This scene single-handedly compensates for the shortcoming, to a large extent. Talking of minuses, the makers keep a few aspects ambiguous and that hampers the impact minimally. Vikrant Massey delivers one of the best performances of his career. We all adored him in 12th Fail and here, the audience is going to get disgusted by him and his actions. Deepak Dobriyal too puts his best foot forward and allows his silences to do talking in important scenes. Akash Khurana (Balbir Singh Bassi) and Darshan Jariwalla (DCP Jawahar Rastogi) lend able support. Kacho Ahmed (Compounder Chote Lal), Ajeet S Palawat (Constable Pathak) and Mahadev S Lakhawat (Constable Bishnoi) have limited screen time and they do very well. The others who perform ably are Baharul Islam (Bhupen Saikia), Raghav Kalra (Young Prem), Trimala Adhikari (Jyoti; Prem’s wife) and Subir Bisawas (Chumki’s father). All in all, Sector 36 is a disturbing and yet, a must-watch film.
