Scream (aka Scream 5) is a poor and sad remake of the previous films in the franchise. Under the guise of meta commentary and giving tribute to the old films, the makers simply use the same formula and hence, one hardly experiences thrill or scare, as we have seen it all in the last 4 films of Scream. The ending is unpredictable but it comes at a point when you are tired of seeing the same stuff again and again. Moreover, Woodsboro should have been the most fortified place in the USA considering the bloody history. Yet, the city still lacks CCTV cameras, allowing killers to don the ghostface and go on a rampage! Such glaring loopholes further reduce the impact. Melissa Barrera (Samantha) is fine in the lead role while Jack Quaid (Richie), Dylan Minnette (Wes), Jenna Ortega (Tara), Jasmin Savoy Brown (Mindy) and Mason Gooding (Chad) also do well. Neve Campbell (Sidney), Courteney Cox (Gale Weathers) and David Arquette (Dewey) reprise the roles from the previous Scream films. They are good but they have done better in the predecessors. All in all, Scream (aka Scream 5) is unimaginative and lacks novelty.
My rating – * ½ out of 5!
