Neruda, based on the life of Chilean poet and politician Pablo Neruda, can hardly be a called a biopic. This is my first Pablo Larraín film and it was impressive to see how in this film he mixes fiction with a form of truth and extracts some great performances from his actors. However, since not being used to such kind of a setting for a film and also Neruda’s works, it took me a while to grasp the whole thing as well. Performance wise, all actors do great but it’s Luis Gnecco, as Neruda, and Gael García Bernal as Peluchoneau who obviously take the cake. Dialogue deliveries of both stand out, especially Luis – the way he recites his poems is brilliant. Work of the technical team is top-class – especially the cinematography.
My rating – *** out of 5!
