(Crisp) Movie Review: LOVEYAPA by FENIL SETA

Loveyapa rests on a solid concept – two love birds exchanging phones with each other for 24 hours and the madness that ensues from thereon. The idea is relatable and the makers pepper the film with some funny and dramatic moments. The second half also makes an important point about relationships. However, the film suffers as the performances of the lead actors are not quite the best. In the original film, Love Today, the makers mentioned the real names of the apps and also showed their actual interface. Here, the makers come up with surrogate apps with cheap copy interfaces and they don’t even properly mention WhatsApp, Instagram etc. This takes away the realism. The first half is just okay and an important plot point is forgotten completely. Lastly, the use of the song ‘Leja’ is a bad idea as it has already been utilized in Mismatched Season 3 and also, it’s a viral song on Instagram Reels and Stories. Junaid Khan tries his best but falters in some scenes. He also doesn’t look like an apt ‘Delhi ka launda’. Khushi Kapoor is raw in some scenes but handles the emotional scenes better. Ashutosh Rana and Kiku Sharda are entertaining. Grusha Kapoor (Gucci’s mother), Tanvika Parlikar (Gucci’s sister), Devishi Madaan (Pinti; Bani’s sister), Nikhil Mehta (Shanky), Aaditya Kulshreshth (Lamba), Jason Tham (Bobby), Yunus Khan (Jaggi) and Yuktam Khosla (Karan) are memorable. Bhawya Chawla (Coochiepoo) is aptly cast. All in all, Loveyapa is a one-time watch mainly thanks to its concept.
