Looop Lapeta, a remake of Run Lola Run, is based on time loop. The idea is interesting and not many films in India have been made on this concept. Hence, it makes for a nice watch. Debutant director Aakash Bhatia’s direction is technically quite strong and he has been aided by very stylish cinematography and stylish editing. In fact, the camerawork and editing are unlike anything one has seen in Hindi films. However, these things can’t save a film when the content is not strong. The film suffers as the humour is not quite strong. Secondly, the side tracks of the cabbie and his lover and that of the nincompoop children of the jeweller are very weak. It’s bewildering to see that Savi (Taapsee Pannu) has just 50 minutes to complete the mission and instead of focusing on her work, she chooses to do timepass and get embroiled in other people’s lives. Speaking of performances, Taapsee Pannu, as always, is in top form and tries to rise above the script. Tahir Raj Bhasin could have been better. Dibyendu Bhattacharya (Victor; gangster) is apt for the part. Shreya Dhanwanthary (Julia)’s track is unwanted but she is lovely. Her monologue is superb. Rajendra Chawla (Mamlesh) is fine but the actors playing his sons – Raghav Raj Kakker (Gappu; ‘Karamchand’ of Scam 1992 fame) and Manik Papneja (Appu) – try too hard to be funny. Abdul Majid Shaikh (Old man) is cute. K C Shankar (Savi’s father), Sameer Kevin Roy (Jacob; cabbie) and Bhupesh Bandekar (Cop) are okay. All in all, Looop Lapeta is technically quite strong but suffers due to the script. Average fare.
My rating – ** ½ out of 5!
