Kalank rests on a waferthin and unconvincing plot and is too lengthy. The various developments in the film are silly and unconvincing. Except for Roop-Zafar’s love story, no other parts of the story will move or stir viewers. Thankfully, a few scenes here and there are good and the last 30 minutes keeps viewers engrossed. Also, the performances and music is praiseworthy. Varun Dhawan handles his part very well and is quite massy. Alia Bhatt has the maximum screen time out of all actors and despite the flawed script, she constantly tries to rise above it. Sonakshi Sinha is sincere and cute but her role gives a déjà vu of a memorable film she has done before. Aditya Roy Kapur seems a bit monotonous and gets better in the second half. Madhuri Dixit is stunning as always while Sanjay Dutt (in a special appearance) is strictly okay. Songs keep the interest going, especially ‘Ghar More Pardesiya’, ‘First Class’ and ‘Tabah Ho Gaye’. All in all, Kalank is visually stunning and has some fine performances and music. But the soul of the film is missing. Average fare!
