Jojo Rabbit is a fun-filled unique entertainer that also makes a great comment on the Us vs Them narrative, a bane of our times. The plot is great while the setting is also one of its kind – the director focuses on the fashionable side of the Germans even though the country is about to be defeated in the World War. The dialogues are very witty and smart and contribute a lot to the humour. But the best part of the film is the depiction of Adolf Hitler. It’s a masterstroke, just like Gandhiji in Lage Raho Munna Bhai. A few developments seem a bit bewildering but these are minor complaints. Talking of performances, Roman Griffin Davis is too good and gets totally into the skin of his character. Thomasin McKenzie is brilliant too and her entry scene is hilarious. Scarlett Johansson is adorable and her Oscar nomination is well deserved. Another likeable part is of Sam Rockwell – this actor is highly underrated and deserves a huge fan base of his own. Stephen Merchant leaves a tremendous mark with just one scene. Rebel Wilson is fine though I hope that after Isn’t It Romantic, she sticks to lead roles or at least roles with more screen time. And finally, Taika Waititi, also the director, is splendid as Hitler and will be remembered for years! All in all, Jojo Rabbit emerges as a winner because of it’s touching, witty and funny scenes and performances. It sure deserves a watch in cinemas!
My rating – **** ½ out of 5!
