Indu Sarkar tries to play too safe and in the process, it misses the bus. For those who want to know about the horrors of Emergency, this film serves as a good source. But we don’t go to see a film to get information. We need entertainment and in that regard, Indu Sarkar falters. It’s frustrating to see Neil Nitin Mukesh being addressed as ‘Chief’ and his mother prime minister is called as ‘Mummy’ by him and ‘pradhan mantri’ by others. What are we so scared of? Just take the damn name. Moreover, the (long) disclaimer in the beginning states that the film is COMPLETELY a work of fiction, which raises laughs. Kirti Kulhari however does very well and it’s great to see this actress in yet another powerpacked performance after Pink. Neil Nitin Mukesh looks menacing and is a pro when it comes to villainous roles. Tota Roy Chowdhury deserves to be seen more in films while Anupam Kher deserved to be seen more in this film. Manav Vij (Inspector Sodhi) plays a cool character and is very good. Satyajeet Sharma (Om Nath), Sheeba Chadha and Ankur Vikal are good in their respective roles. Songs are not needed and one qawaali is needlessly forced in the film. Madhur Bhandarkar is in much a better space this time as compared to Calendar Girls. But I hope that the next time he chooses a powerful subject, he does complete justice to it and doesn’t ruin it by playing safe
My rating – ** ½ out of 5!
