Gladiator II takes the story forward beautifully after the much-loved first part. The opening is shaky but soon, the film gets on track and turns out to be a superb entertainer. The action scenes are disturbing but it’s the requirement of the story. Most importantly, one roots for the hero and this keeps viewers gripped. The political track also takes centre stage and makes for an amusing watch. However, it also gets a bit confusing. Also, this track has more importance this time, even at the cost of action. Hence, those expecting a lot of fights might feel a bit disappointed. Paul Mescal is superb in the lead role. Denzel Washington, however, is the scene-stealer in the film. An Oscar nomination-worthy act! Joseph Quinn (Emperor Geta) and Fred Hechinger (Emperor Caracalla) are aptly cast. Pedro Pascal (General Acacius) and Connie Nielsen (Lucilla) leave a huge mark. All in all, Gladiator II is a well-made film and a must for those who are fans of the first part.
