Ghoomer is a sports-based drama about a cricketer who has lost her right arm. It is written and directed by R Balki and his trademark stamp is evident all over the film. The character of Abhishek Bachchan has a dry and dark sense of humour and the bond shared by the mentor and protégé is unusual and yet intriguing. This is also not a usual sports film as the character is trying to get back on her feet after a horrible accident. The second half is longer but doesn’t seem like it at all. On the flipside, a few developments are convenient. The narrative is also too quick in some sequences. And the biggest problem is that the trailer gives out a very important plot point. There’s a proper build-up done before that scene. But it doesn’t have the desired impact since one already knows what’s coming. Speaking of performances, Abhishek Bachchan delivers one of the finest performances of his career and it ranks next to Guru and Yuva. It’s also good to see him on the big screen after nearly 5 years. Saiyami Kher plays a difficult character with ease. Shabana Azmi is adorable. Angad Bedi is decent. Piyush Raina and Akshay Joshi (Saiyami’s brothers) are wasted. Shivendra Singh Dungarpur (Saiyami’s father) gets limited scope. Ivanka Das (Rasika) leaves a mark. Amitabh Bachchan is likeable in a special appearance. But some of his dialogues are not audible. All in all, Ghoomer is a fine effort and worth watching once.
