Encanto is intended to be a sweet Disney animated Thanksgiving film. Most of the Disney films released at this time of the year have been highly memorable. But Encanto turns out to be the most disappointing of the lot. It starts off beautifully and neatly explains the setting and the dilemma of the principal characters. It’s obviously a musical and some of the songs are excellent and very well picturized. The animation is also fascinating. But the pre-climax and climax fail to entice. One expects a thrilling end but the finale is underwhelming. Also, the last part of the film is difficult to understand for adults and especially for kids. The message is so deep that it seems as if Imtiaz Ali has helmed the last 30 minutes! The voiceovers are perfect; special mention should go to Stephanie Beatriz for voicing the protagonist, Mirabel. All in all, Encanto is an average fare and a rare Disney animated film that doesn’t give you your money’s worth.
My rating – ** ½ out of 5!
